Options positioning and GEX

OPX shows where open interest sits on a US option underlying; GEX estimates the gamma dealers carry against it

How GEX is estimated

Nobody publishes who holds which option. GEX assumes customers sell calls and buy puts, so dealers are long every call and short every put. Net GEX is call gamma minus put gamma.

Positive means dealers hedge against a move: they sell rallies and buy dips. Negative means they hedge with it.

FigureMeans
UnitDollars of dealer delta per 1% move in the underlying
FlipThe spot level, within 15% of spot, where net GEX changes sign
Call wallThe strike with the most call gamma, in one expiry or all
Put wallThe strike with the most put gamma, in one expiry or all
Dealer rangeNet GEX if dealers held only 25% to 75% of each side

The Expiries tab's net GEX uses the same strikes and volatilities as All, so its rows add up to it.

How each figure is computed
  • Gamma per contract is Black-Scholes gamma with the forward at spot, times the 100-share multiplier. Time runs to 16:00 New York on the expiry date, at least one hour.
  • Each strike's volatility comes from its expiry's out-of-the-money quotes, linear between quoted strikes and flat beyond. An expiry without usable quotes is left out and named.
  • GEX at a strike is gamma × 100 × spot × 1% of spot × open interest.
  • The flip reprices net GEX from 15% below to 15% above spot in 0.25% steps, each strike keeping its volatility, and takes the sign change nearest spot.
  • A tie for a wall goes to the lowest strike. Walls mark where hedging is heaviest, not levels the price has to respect.
Dealer range and box spreads
  • The range sets the dealer share anywhere from 25% to 75% of the calls and, separately, of the puts. The low end is 25% of call gamma minus 75% of put gamma, the high end the reverse.
  • The headline figure counts all of the open interest, so it can sit outside the range. When the range spans zero, the sign of net GEX depends on who holds which side.
  • On SPX and XSP, matched call and put open interest at paired round strikes far from spot is read as box spreads and taken out of both sides. Net GEX and the flip stay the same; the range narrows and says boxes out.

How fresh it is

InputAs of
Open interestAbout two sessions old. The footer names its date.
Spot and option quotes15 minutes behind on Free and signed out, live on Pro
GEXRepriced at the current spot every minute while the pane is open

During a session, GEX applies today's spot and volatilities to open interest from about two sessions back.

Exports

gloomberb fn GEX SPY --csv opens with a summary: spot and quote times, the open interest session, the unit, net GEX, the dealer range, the flip and both walls. Puts export negative, so call and put GEX add up to net. --json has the same under metadata.gamma.

Keep in mind

  • GEX is a model on open interest, not measured dealer positions. On single stocks the customer side can be the reverse.
  • VIX options settle on VIX futures, so VIX has no GEX tab.
